Summary:

* Try to price your apps high enough so you have steadily increasing demand but not spiking demand

* As download growth starts to level off, lower your price incrementally. Continue until you get to .99

* Free apps don’t really pay off via advertising unless it goes gangbusters or you are advertising your own products

This update, so minor that for the first week it hasn’t been featured on Apple.com’s “Get the latest update” page, was released last week to a general
chorus of disappointment (not even counting the tantrums.) It enhances Safari stability, fixes a minor bug where some images saved from Mail do not display correctly in Camera Roll (or iTouch’s Saved Photos), and for iTouch, fixes an issue that caused some Apple Lossless audio files to skip during playback.

No cut-and-paste, no voice dialing, and in particular not the rumored push notifications. (MacRumors Update: “This is fake.” No new rumors have surfaced in its place.) And - sorry - still no MMS (there’s always Flutter.)

No reports of big installation problems seem to have bubbled up, either. Just make sure you have iTunes 8 (here’s a troubleshooting page, just in case) and connect the iPhone; if Update is not showing on the device’s Summary tab, then Check for Updates should show.

Here’s a question: is the parallel release of a new SDK 2.2.1 the real point of this round of announcements?

The Amazon.com app, released at the end of November, has a smooth if slightly limited interface in case the mobile version of their site (which Safari will serve by default) is not iPhone-tailored to your liking. The available options are at least as much like the mobile site as the mobile site is like the PC site (which can be visited from your iPhone if you insist) … enough alike that it’s almost boring. Some tracking (Recently Viewed) is not synched with the other sites, though all your lists are.

The news, coming on top of SnapTell’s popularity, is a beta function called “Amazon Remembers” which accepts a camera shot of any product and tries to find it for sale in Amazon’s extended bazaar. The twist: real humans look at your transmission. (Shades of Yahoo Search!) The putative humans snappily identified two books from the early 1970’s that SnapTell never could figure out, and another that ST had comically misidentified in a different way each try. On the other hand, you can leave yourself open to some witticisms from the presumably bored “research” team: as when I sent in a shot of an old New Balance running shoe — not real old, the direct predecessor of a current model, but well-used. I would have been glad to find where I could buy a pair of the old model, whose fit I liked, but instead was offered New Balance Shoe Cleaner, 8oz., as a consolation prize. Pretty funny, guys, you passed the Turing test!

Much attention has been given to this new app, a kind of visual Shazam which takes a picture of some book you’ve found, sends the snap to its mother ship, and returns some buying advice and multiple links to major reference or book sites that review or sell it. I dragged some random books off a dusty shelf to see how well it works.

Recent non-fiction books were id’d quickly with the default settings (you can request a slower search that sends a bigger picture file, or vice-versa.) Likewise a beat-up copy of a recent NYT bestseller, but only after a couple of tries - what worked was making sure to get the entire cover into the photo, not just the verbiage.

Another recent book, with an extremely simple cover (title and author on a field of white with one tiny graphic) would not be recognized until I set the settings to Slow Search.

Two early-70’s books never did get recognized: a very small publisher’s “Springs of Oriental Wisdom” with a distinctive arty cover, and a classic in a [possibly] deprecated genre, Niven & Pournelle’s “The Mote in God’s Eye”. But an influential non-fiction book from the same year, Schumacher’s “Small is Beautiful”, was promptly found; likewise The [Nixon] White House Transcripts, same vintage & importance.

The oldest book I found, “The Making of the President 1968″ which is part of Theodore White’s very well-known series, was mis-identified repeatedly, as different unrelated works depending on the search settings: at default Medium over wi-fi, as “From the Ashes of the Old: American Labor and America’s Future”; at Slow over G3, as “The Doctrine of Salvation and Free Agency with Dispensational Truths”!

Lessons:

get the whole cover in the snap: this is image recognition not character recognition

use slow enough search: it doesn’t seem to cost much delay at high-speed connects

best application for this is shopping not research: not everything is there, current is better, you can find your book in the store and immediately see where you should buy it instead [sorry, store!]

Take a look at this graphic showing consumer satisfaction and market share from our friends at JD Power and Associates. It’s really remarkable to get a 5 STAR rating in 5 out of 6 categories for *any* product.

Apple’s success has had a ripple effect on its competitors. Nokia, saw its lead erode from a commanding 51.4 percent in summer of last year to 38.9 percent in the wake of iPhone 3G’s launch. Symbian, which powers all of Nokia’s phones, also took a tumble from its presence on 68.1 percent of all shipping phones to 46.6 percent.

Microsoft has also taken a bruising. Represented by the collective number of Windows Mobile smartphones, the software developer now represents just 13.6 percent of the market to itself.
